The patio is the floor. The features are what make people stay out there after dinner.
They are also where budgets get away from homeowners, because a fire pit and a seating wall and a pergola can each cost more than the surface they sit on. Worth knowing before you fall for a photo.
The bigger issue is timing. Most features have to be decided before the base is compacted, since gas lines, conduit, footings and wall foundations all live under or beside the finished surface. Deciding late means lifting stone.

Decide Features Before the Base Closes
Almost everything on this list is easy while the patio is a hole in the ground and expensive once it is a finished surface. Work through this before the excavator shows up.

The cheap insurance is sleeving. Running empty conduit under the base costs very little and leaves you the option of adding lighting, a gas line or spa power years later without touching the surface. Almost nobody regrets an unused sleeve.

Raised and Elevated Paver Patios
A raised patio sits above the surrounding grade, held in place by a wall around its perimeter. It is the standard answer when a door sits well above the yard, or when the lot falls away from the house and a patio at grade would need a long run of steps to reach.
- What it solves. A walkout at the wrong height, a sloped yard, or a basement door that opens into a hole.
- How it is built. A block retaining wall goes up first, the interior is filled with compacted aggregate in lifts, and the paver surface is set on top of that fill.
- What it costs. Expect to pay for the wall and the fill on top of the patio itself. A raised patio commonly runs two to three times the price of the same footprint at grade.
- What to watch. Anything over about 4 feet of exposed wall height usually needs engineering and, in many jurisdictions, a permit. Drainage behind the wall is not optional.
Raised patios also need a railing in most cases once the drop passes 30 inches, which changes the look and adds cost. Plan for it rather than discovering it at inspection.
When the grade change is severe, a raised patio is not always the cheaper answer. Comparing it against how a raised structure handles a change in grade is worth doing before you commit to filling and walling a hillside.
Retaining Walls and Seating Walls
Both are built from segmental wall block and both look similar when finished, but they do completely different jobs and are engineered differently.

Retaining Walls
A retaining wall is a structural element. The block you see is the smallest part of it. Behind the wall sits gravel backfill, drain pipe daylighted to somewhere useful, and often geogrid tied back into the soil every few courses on taller walls.
Two rules to hold onto. Water is what fails retaining walls, not weight, so never let a contractor skip the drainage detail. And walls over about 4 feet usually need a design stamp and a permit, which is a timeline item, not just a cost item.
Seating Walls
A seating wall is the highest value feature per dollar on most patios. It defines the edge of the space, gives overflow seating for a crowd, and blocks a sight line into a neighbor’s yard, all without the bulk of furniture.
- Build it 18 to 20 inches high. That is chair height. Taller reads as a barrier, shorter is uncomfortable.
- Use a wide cap. A 12 inch cap gives room to set a plate or a drink down. A narrow cap looks fine and gets used less.
- Curve it if the patio is rectangular. A gentle curve softens a hard footprint far more cheaply than curving the patio itself.
- Leave openings. A continuous wall traps people. Plan the gaps where the traffic already wants to go.
Fire Pits and Fireplaces
The most requested feature, and the one that most often gets people outside in October. There are three versions and they differ mostly in permanence.
- Portable fire bowl. $150 to $600, no planning required, and it can move. The right answer for a patio that is already finished.
- Built in wood burning pit. $2,000 to $4,500. Matching block or stone, permanent, and needs no utility run.
- Built in gas fire feature. $3,500 to $6,000 and up. Instant on, no smoke, no wood storage, but a gas line has to be trenched before the base is compacted.
- Full outdoor fireplace. $8,000 to $20,000. A vertical structure with a chimney, usually on its own footing, and a different project in scale from everything above.
Clearance is the part people get wrong. Plan roughly 5 feet of open surface on every side of the fire so chairs pull back safely, which means a fire feature needs a 16 to 18 foot circle of patio to sit in comfortably. Placing one in a 12 foot square patio uses up the whole space.
Also think about wind. Put the pit downwind of the dining zone based on the prevailing direction, or you will be moving your plate every time the breeze shifts.
Clearances get stricter when the fire sits on a built surface rather than on the ground. The considerations laid out for putting a fire feature on a raised structure apply directly to a raised patio too.

Hot Tubs on a Paver Patio
A filled hot tub with people in it weighs 4,000 to 6,000 pounds concentrated on a small footprint. That is far more load than a standard patio base is built to carry, and it is the feature most often installed wrong.
- The base has to be upgraded. Either a reinforced concrete pad under the paver surface, or a substantially deeper and wider compacted base engineered for the load.
- Power has to be planned. Most tubs need a dedicated 240 volt circuit on a GFCI disconnect within sight of the tub. The conduit goes in before the base is compacted.
- Leave service access. Panels have to come off on at least one side, and eventually the tub has to be lifted out. Do not build a wall tight around three sides.
- Plan the drainage. Tubs get drained a few times a year. That water has to go somewhere other than against the foundation.
Sinking a tub partway into a raised patio looks excellent and complicates every one of the points above. It is worth doing, but it belongs in the drawing from day one, not as a change order.
Pergolas, Pavilions and Gazebos
Shade decides whether a patio gets used in July. A space in full afternoon sun sits empty no matter how well it was built.
- Pergola. $4,000 to $12,000 installed. An open slat roof that breaks up direct sun without blocking it entirely. Cedar, aluminum or vinyl, with louvered versions costing considerably more.
- Pavilion. $10,000 to $30,000. A solid roof, which means real shade and rain protection, and a structure that requires a permit in most jurisdictions.
- Gazebo. $5,000 to $15,000. Freestanding, usually octagonal, and typically set as its own focal point rather than over the dining zone.
- Shade sail or umbrella. $200 to $2,000. No footings, no permit, and the right answer when the budget is spent.
The footing question is what matters for sequencing. Any permanent overhead structure needs posts set on footings below the frost line, which around here means roughly 36 inches deep. Those footings go in before the patio base, and the paver surface is cut around the posts afterward.
A freestanding pergola anchored to the finished surface is possible and much easier to add later, though it is less stable in wind and generally reads as an add on rather than as part of the design.
Steps, Landings and Grade Changes
Any change of more than about 6 inches wants real steps rather than a slope. Steps are also one of the few features where consistency matters more than looks.
- Keep every riser identical. Uneven risers are the most common trip hazard in a backyard. If one step is an inch taller than the others, people will catch a toe on it.
- Aim for a 6 to 7 inch rise and a 12 inch or deeper tread. Outdoor steps feel shallower and deeper than indoor stairs.
- Build them wide. Steps at least as wide as the door or path they serve, and wider still if they double as casual seating.
- Use a landing on longer runs. More than four or five risers in a row wants a flat landing to break it up.
- Light them. Step lights or cap lights are the single most useful lighting on a patio, and the conduit has to be run early.
Mixing Pavers With Gravel, Turf and Planting
Not every square foot has to be paved. Mixed surfaces cost less, drain better, and often look more considered than a solid field of stone.
Pea Gravel and Paver Combinations
Pea gravel next to pavers is a popular and genuinely practical pairing. Pave the zones that hold furniture, then run gravel through the connecting areas or around the perimeter.
- It costs far less. Roughly $3 to $7 per square foot installed versus $12 and up for pavers.
- It drains completely. Useful in a low area, and it can absorb roof runoff that would otherwise pool.
- It needs a hard edge. Steel edging or a paver soldier course, or the gravel migrates into the lawn within a season.
- It is not furniture friendly. Chair legs sink and table legs wobble. Keep gravel out of the dining zone.
Grass Between Pavers
Setting pavers with wide joints and growing turf or a low ground cover between them gives a softer, garden look and lets water through. It works best on paths and low traffic areas, not under a dining table.
The tradeoff is maintenance. Those joints need mowing, edging and occasional replanting, and turf between stones struggles in heavy shade or heavy traffic. Creeping thyme and similar ground covers handle it better than grass in most yards.
Planting Beds and Borders
A shallow bed along one or two edges softens the transition to lawn, hides slight grade irregularity, and screens a view for less than a fence costs. Keep bed soil below the paver surface so mulch does not wash across the patio in a hard rain.
Connecting a Patio to a Deck or Pool
Two common combinations, each with its own detail to get right.
- Patio at the base of a deck. The most common pairing. Keep the patio surface at least a few inches below the bottom of the deck framing for airflow and drainage, and slope it away from the posts.
- Patio under a deck. Works well with a drainage system installed under the deck boards. Without one, the space stays wet and unusable after every rain.
- Pool decking. Choose a paver with texture and a light color, since dark stone gets genuinely too hot for bare feet in July. Salt systems also call for a paver rated for salt exposure.
- Coping and edges. Pool coping is a specific product with a rounded or bullnose edge. Standard pavers set at a pool edge are uncomfortable and unsafe.
Lighting and Power
The cheapest feature on the list and the one that changes how much the patio gets used, because it extends the usable hours past sundown.
- Wall cap lights. Set into seating or retaining wall caps, washing light down the face. The most flattering option and the least glaring.
- Step and riser lights. Function first, and they make an evening patio genuinely safer.
- In ground uplights. Aimed at trees or the house, they give the space depth rather than lighting the surface itself.
- String lights. Need something to hang from, which is a good reason to plan posts even if a pergola comes later.
- An outdoor outlet. One weatherproof receptacle near the patio quietly solves a dozen future problems.
A low voltage system covers most of this and does not require a licensed electrician in the way a 240 volt spa circuit does. The conduit and sleeves still have to be placed before the base is compacted.

Phasing: Build the Surface Now, Add Features Later
Almost nobody builds everything at once, and there is no reason to. The workable approach is to design the whole thing on paper, install the underground work for all of it, then build the surface and add features over the following seasons.
- Design the finished space completely. Including where the fire feature, walls and pergola will eventually sit.
- Run every sleeve and pour every footing during the build. Conduit, gas, and post footings cost little now and are the expensive part later.
- Build the patio surface and any retaining walls. These are structural and cannot be deferred.
- Add the seating wall and steps next season. They tie into the surface but do not require lifting it if the base was extended.
- Finish with the pergola, kitchen and lighting. All of these land on top of work already done.
