The Five Checks Your Slab Has to Pass

1. Is the Slab Structurally Sound?

Walk the whole surface. Anything that rocks, shifts underfoot or sounds hollow when you tap it means the base beneath the slab has washed out or failed. Pavers will not bridge that.

2. Does It Already Drain Away From the House?

Look at it during the next rain, or run a hose on it. Water should leave the surface within a few minutes. An overlay follows the slope it is built on, so a slab that puddles now will puddle under pavers, except the water will sit in your bedding sand as well.

3. Will the Added Height Still Clear Your Door?

This is the check that kills the most overlay projects, and it takes one measurement. Measure from the slab surface to the bottom of your door threshold. You want to end up with 3 to 4 inches of clearance remaining after the new surface is in.

4. Are the Cracks Stable and Narrow?

Hairline cracks with no vertical offset between the two sides are usually fine. A crack where one side sits higher than the other, or one wide enough to put a finger into, means the slab is still moving. That movement will telegraph up through a rigid overlay and eventually through a sand set one.

5. Can You Contain the Edges?

Pavers laid on a slab have nothing holding them in at the perimeter. You need either a mortared border course, an edge restraint fastened into the concrete, or a slab that is larger than the paved area so the restraint can sit on it. Without an edge, the field spreads.

Mortar Set Thin Pavers

Thin pavers, roughly an inch thick, bonded to the slab with a mortar bed. Total height gain is about 1.5 inches.

  • Advantages. By far the least height added, which sometimes makes an overlay possible when nothing else would. Fully bonded, so nothing shifts.
  • Disadvantages. Rigid, which means slab cracks will eventually reflect through. Harder to repair, and effectively permanent.
  • Best for. Tight threshold clearances and slabs in very good condition.

How to Lay Pavers Over Concrete

  1. Clean the slab completely. Sweep, wash and let it dry. Any loose material under the bedding layer becomes a void later.
  2. Fix what you can. Fill spalled areas and level low spots with a concrete patching compound. Skip this and the low spot reappears in the finished surface.
  3. Address drainage before anything else. If the slab holds water, solve that first. Everything after this step assumes water leaves the surface.
  4. Plan and fasten the edge. Decide now whether the perimeter is a mortared soldier course or a restraint fastened into the concrete, and install it before the field goes down.
  5. Lay a thin bedding course. About an inch of coarse sand, screeded flat, for a sand set install. Do not build it up thicker to correct grade.
  6. Set the field. Work off the finished surface, place stones straight down rather than sliding them, and check your lines every few rows.
  7. Cut the perimeter and finish the joints. Sweep in joint sand, compact carefully with a protective pad, then refill until the joints stop taking sand.

One difference worth noting against a normal build. There is no compaction of a base, and the plate compactor is used lightly at the end only, because you are running it over concrete with a thin sand layer between.

The Height Problem

Almost every overlay that goes wrong goes wrong here, and it is entirely predictable with a tape measure.

Dealing With Cracks in the Slab

  • Hairline cracks, no offset. Fine. Clean them out, fill with a flexible concrete crack filler, and proceed.
  • Cracks with vertical offset. The slab has moved and probably still is. A sand set overlay may tolerate a small offset. A mortar set will crack again in the same place.
  • Wide or spreading cracks. The base under the slab has failed. Covering it is money spent twice.
  • Spalling and flaking surface. Cosmetic if it is shallow. Patch the low areas so the bedding layer sits evenly.

A useful test: mark both sides of a crack with a pencil line and check it after a freeze and a thaw. If the marks no longer line up, the slab is still moving and the answer is removal, not overlay.

A different project from covering one. Here the slab stays as it is and a new paved area is added beside it, which is often the cheapest way to gain usable space.

Building the New Section

The extension is a normal paver patio: excavate 10 to 12 inches, compact a proper base, screed sand, set the stones. The only special work happens at the seam.

The Seam Between Old and New

  • Do not tie them together rigidly. The slab and the new base will move independently through freeze and thaw. A rigid connection cracks.
  • Use a soldier course at the joint. A row of pavers running along the seam makes the transition read as a design line rather than a repair.
  • Match the finished heights carefully. Level with the slab, or a deliberate single step. Anything in between is a trip hazard.
  • Restrain the new edge at the seam. The new field needs edge restraint against the slab just as it does anywhere else.

Matching an Older Surface

You will not match a weathered slab with new pavers, so stop trying. The better move is to make the contrast intentional: a paver extension in a color that complements rather than imitates the concrete, with a clean border at the seam.
